My roommate said my $2.50 rice and beans tasted like "hotel food" and I almost threw the pot at him
I've been making the same pot of black beans and rice every Sunday for about 4 months now, comes out to roughly $2.50 for 3 dinners plus lunch. My roommate Mark took one bite and said it tasted like something you'd get at a hotel breakfast buffet in Columbus, which I took as an insult for 2 weeks. Then I actually sat with it and realized he meant it was too plain, so I started throwing in a can of Rotel, some cumin, and a squeeze of lime at the end. Turns out $0.75 of extra stuff fixed the whole thing. What's the one cheap add-on that totally changed a dish you were ready to give up on?
