Store brand canned tomatoes flipped my chili game after 9 years of name brand
Switched to the $0.89 store brand at Kroger last month for a pot of chili and the texture was way better, thicker and less watery, so has anyone else found a random generic item that beat the fancy stuff or am I just lucky?
That "thicker and less watery" thing is real and it comes down to how they pack them. The cheap cans often use a heavier tomato paste or just pack more fruit in, while some name brands water it down to stretch the batch. I ran into the same deal with canned beans, the store brand held their shape in a slow cook and the big name turned to mush by hour three. Next time you're at Kroger grab two cans, one of each, and do a side by side in the same pot. You'll know in twenty minutes if it's luck or a real upgrade.
