Store brand rice gave me the worst dinner fail of my life

Grabbed a bag of the store brand jasmine rice for $1.89 at Kroger last Tuesday, figured it was a steal. Got home, cooked it up with some eggs and frozen veggies, and it came out tasting like cardboard with a weird plastic smell. I thought maybe I messed up the water ratio, but my roommate tried it and confirmed it was the rice itself. Ended up tossing the whole batch and ordering pizza instead. Anyone else had a store brand grain go totally sideways on them like that?

I switched to the name brand jasmine rice after a similar flopped dinner last year, and the difference was night and day. For me, the trick was rinsing the store brand rice three times before cooking and adding a teaspoon of salt to the water to cover the plastic taste. Have you tried that or did you just toss the whole bag?

I always defended store brand rice until I tried rinsing it three times like you said, and you made me a believer.

Blair that's rough, I had a similar experience with a big bag of off-brand basmati last spring. My whole kitchen smelled like a plastic factory and the rice turned out gummy and weird no matter what I did. @juliag10 I actually tried the triple rinse trick on mine and it helped a little but that plastic taste was still there in the background. Ended up giving the rest of the bag to a neighbor who feeds birds, they didn't seem to mind.
