Switched to store brand pasta after a taste test with my neighbor and I can't tell the difference anymore

We did a blind test with 4 boxes of spaghetti from different brands at his place last Tuesday and the generic 88 cent one beat out the $3 name brand for texture and bite, has anyone else done a blind taste off and had their assumptions flipped?

My neighbor had me convinced I was a pasta snob until he proved me wrong with a box of the cheap stuff.

Wait did you actually try the cheap stuff or did he just tell you about it? I tell people all the time, the trick is in how you cook it not what you paid for it. I used to swear by the expensive bronze die cut pasta until I ran out and grabbed a dollar box of the store brand. You just gotta salt the water heavy like the ocean and pull it a minute before the box says, then finish it in the sauce. The cheap stuff soaks up the sauce different, in a good way. Now I keep both kinds in my pantry and use whatever is on sale. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about saving a few bucks on pasta.
