Chimney brush wear after 20 years, noticed it on a Tuesday job

Last week I was doing a routine sweep in Dayton and my wire brush finally gave out. I bought it back in 2004, used it on maybe 800 flues without thinking twice. The bristles were down to stubs, I just never paid attention. Swapped in a new one and the difference was night and day, soot came off way faster. Anyone else hold onto old brushes way longer than they should?

800 flues on one brush? That's wild. My brushes get replaced every couple seasons even when they look okay, I can't imagine pushing one through that many chimneys. The soot must've just been packing down instead of actually scraping off toward the end there.
