Bought a $260 zero setter for my Haas, or just use a piece of paper like the old guys?
Dropped $260 on a Renishaw probe setup for my VF-2 about 4 months back. Used it maybe 6 times. The rest of the time I am jogging down with a strip of notebook paper like Larry showed me when I started at the shop in '09.
Side A: the probe is money well spent. No more tapping a tool on a 1-2-3 block, no more scrapping a part because I fat fingered an offset. Pays for itself the first time you wreck a $90 chunk of aluminum.
Side B: paper and a cigarette rolling paper has worked for 40 years. Guys ran Bridgeports for decades without a probe and parts still came out in spec. $260 is a weeks worth of groceries.
At my shop in Gary there are 3 guys over 55 who laugh at me every time I power the probe on. And 2 young guys who wont touch a machine without one.
Curious what you all actually do. Is the probe a real upgrade or did I just buy a $260 toy to look fancy in front of the day shift?
