Can we talk about how my grandkid's LEGO set made me rethink my tool setup?
My grandson asked me to help him build a LEGO crane last Saturday and I noticed something about how the instructions were laid out. The manual grouped every step by sub-assembly with a picture of just those parts, not the whole machine. I've been running a 3 axis mill for 11 years and I always keep my whole tool crib in one mental list instead of breaking jobs into stages. I tried it on a batch of 40 aluminum brackets and cut my setup time from about 90 minutes to 55. Same tools, same machine, just chunking the work like those little bags of bricks. Anybody else organize their runs by sub-op instead of just running the whole part in one go?
Wait, you cut setup time from 90 minutes to 55 just by thinking about it like those little bags of bricks? That is a 35 minute drop and I am having a hard time wrapping my head around it. I have been doing this kind of work for a long while and it never once crossed my mind to break a run into stages instead of setting up the whole job at once. The part that really gets me is that you said same tools, same machine, which means the time was sitting there the whole time and nobody saw it. I am going to try this on my next batch and see if it holds up.
