Vent: dropped $400 on a used Kurt vise for my Bridgeport and spent two hours dialing in a part that was already scrap

Bought it off a guy in Dayton who swore it held tenths, but the jaw lift was so bad my endmill walked .015 on a batch of 6061 brackets. Anyone got a go-to trick for checking jaw lift before handing over cash, or do I just eat the $400 and go new?
