Appreciation post: My old boss told me to always check the simple stuff first, and it saved me hours yesterday.

I was working on a desktop from a client in Oak Park that wouldn't power on at all. I was about to start pulling the power supply for testing when I remembered what my first boss, Frank, always said: 'Check the wall outlet and the power strip before you touch a screwdriver.' Sure enough, the surge protector's switch was off. I flipped it, and the machine booted right up. Has anyone else had a 'simple fix' moment that saved a job?

My first IT job at a community college had a printer ticket that stumped three people. They were ready to order a new fuser. I opened the front door and pulled out a crumpled sticky note from the paper path.

Honestly, how many times has a paper jam just been a random piece of trash stuck in there?

Seriously, that's not exactly a major crisis though.
