So last Tuesday a guy walks into the shop with a 2013 MacBook Pro that wont boot, and I figure its a dead drive, easy swap, maybe 40 minutes. I pull the SSD, throw it in my USB adapter, and nothing shows up in Disk Utility, not even the drive letter, just dead. Fine, I tell him the drive is toast and quote him $180 for a new one plus data recovery attempt, and he says go for it. I order a replacement, clone the customer's Time Machine backup, pop the new drive in, and it boots, except now the fans are screaming like a jet and the screen has these weird pink lines on the left edge. Turns out when I opened it up I nicked the display cable with my spudger, and that cable on the 2013 model is soldered right into the board, so now its a $300 logic board repair instead of a simple drive swap. The guy is cool about it, but my boss was not, and I spent Thursday and Friday sourcing a board from a parts guy in Sacramento who wanted $220 cash. It finally booted clean on Saturday morning, but I lost my Saturday plans and my pride over one tiny slip of a plastic tool. Has anyone else cooked a display cable on these older Retinas, or is it just me being clumsy?
