Vent: 3 years ago a shop in Erie lost a client's QuickBooks data because nobody checked the RAID card
I was doing contract work for a small accounting firm in Erie about 3 years ago and the owner called me in a panic because their server wouldn't boot. Turns out the RAID card had been throwing errors in the event log for 6 months and nobody looked, and the backup job had been failing silently since a Windows update in March. We sent the drives to a recovery lab in Cleveland and it cost them $4,200 to get maybe 80% of the data back. The tech who set it up never turned on email alerts, and the owner didn't know he had to ask for that. I now check RAID logs and backup restore tests before I touch anything else on a new client. How do you all handle clients who swear their backups are fine but have never actually tested a restore?
Hit them with the simple question of when was the last time you actually hit restore and watched it finish. Most of them go quiet because they've only ever seen the green checkmark in the backup software, which means nothing if the job never ran. Do you make them sit through a test restore with you before you'll sign off on their setup?
