A shift in how I look at 'official' stories now

I used to take news reports at face value, especially from big outlets. If they said something happened a certain way, I figured that was the full story. About two years ago, a friend pointed out small details in two different articles about the same event that just did not add up. One said a protest had 200 people, another said over 1,000, and the photos looked like the bigger number. That tiny mismatch made me start digging into primary sources, like raw video or direct witness statements, before forming a solid opinion. Now, my first step is to find the original footage or documents if I can, which takes more time but feels way more solid. I guess seeing that one clear difference changed my whole process. Has anyone else had a single fact check that flipped a switch for them?

Remember that story about the satellite images not matching the official report?

Oh man @adam_lewis you just reminded me of the time I tried to compare two blurry satellite images and realized I was looking at my own backyard the whole time. Classic case of me being way too confident and way too wrong.

Wait, which report was that again? I feel like there were a few different stories like that. Got a link or something?
