I picked the cheap home DNA kit over the $300 one and now I am second guessing everything
Six months ago I decided to finally look into some family stuff that never added up. My two options were the $300 test from the big lab that includes health markers, or the $79 ancestry only kit from a company I had never heard of. I went cheap because I figured DNA is DNA, right? The results came back saying I am 34% from a region none of my known relatives come from, and it also matched me with a "possible first cousin" nobody in my family will admit knowing. Now I am sitting here wondering if the cheap chip they use just reads fewer markers and coughs up noise, or if my whole family has been lying for 60 years. I tried emailing their support twice and got the same copy paste answer about "confidence ranges." Has anyone here actually paid for both a budget kit and an expensive one with the same sample, and did the ancestry breakdown even come out close?
