PSA: I paid $280 for a surge protector on my whole house panel and I swear it saved my fridge, or did it?
Back in February we had a brownout during that ice storm and my neighbor's garage fridge died while mine kept humming along. My electrician buddy swears the whole home surge unit I had put on the panel in 2022 for $280 is the only reason nothing in my place fried. But another guy at the supply house told me those things barely do anything and the utility's own line work is what really matters. Now I'm out here wondering if I just paid almost 300 bucks for peace of mind or actual protection. What's the verdict on whole home surge units, worth it or a waste?
