Vent: our blog relaunch lost 40% of organic traffic in 3 weeks and I think the redirect map is the problem
We pushed a full site relaunch for our company blog on March 4th, and by the end of that month organic sessions had dropped from about 12,000 a month to 7,100. I built the redirect map myself in a spreadsheet at 11pm the night before launch, which was probably mistake number one. About 60 old posts got sent to the new category page instead of their matching new URLs, so Google just saw a bunch of 301s pointing at a hub page with thin content. Our developer also switched the URL structure from /blog/post-name to /resources/post-name without telling me until after the deploy. I've fixed about 25 of the redirects so far, but traffic is still flat and I'm not sure if I should keep patching or roll back to the old structure entirely. Has anyone recovered from a botched relaunch like this, and how long did it take before you saw numbers climb back?
