One line from a random guy at the library made me rewrite my whole story

I was stuck on a fantasy novel draft at the downtown public library like 3 months ago. This older guy sat down near me and asked what I was working on. I told him about my worldbuilding and he just said 'your characters sound like they're waiting for the plot to happen to them'. That hit me hard because he was right. I went home and cut 15 pages of setup and started the story right when the main character makes a bad choice. Has anyone else gotten critique from a complete stranger that actually changed how you write?

Read somewhere that strangers can see your story's blind spots like no one else.

Strangers don't owe you politeness the way friends do. That makes them honest.
