Update: The $30 junkyard gauge beat the $200 rebuild kit for my 7.3, and I am still kind of mad about it
Had a rough start on my 2001 F-250 last winter, long crank and white smoke, and the shop in Tulsa quoted me $1,100 to pull and reseal everything. I went the cheap route instead and grabbed a used high pressure oil gauge off a wrecked 7.3 for $30, mostly because I wanted to see if the pump was actually the problem before I burned a weekend on it. My buddy who runs a diesel shop told me I was wasting my time and that a real mechanic just does the job right, but I hooked the gauge to the test port anyway. Numbers came back healthy as could be, turned out my injector o rings were toast and dried out, which cost me $60 to fix. Anyone else think the cheap diagnostic tool route gets crapped on way more than it should, or is my buddy right that I just got lucky?
