Cracked my basement floor trying to level it with the wrong product - self leveler vs. patching compound?

Did you think self-leveler would just magically know where 'flat' meant in your basement? Sounds like you built a nice little skating rink for your washing machine.

Man oh man I learned this one the HARD way. You gotta PRIME the floor first with a bonding agent or that stuff will just run wherever it wants. I use a cheap laser level to mark a line around the walls at the highest point of the floor, then trowel it so the puddle matches that line all the way across. Also you have to mix it THICKER than the bag says or it'll find Every single crack and slope. Mix it like pancake batter not soup.
