Pro tip: check the power cord before you crack open the device
Spent 45 minutes diagnosing a dead monitor at the thrift shop on Broadway last week. Turned out the cord was chewed through right behind the ferrite bead. Now I check cables first every time before I even grab a screwdriver - who else has a simple check that saves them hours?

Got a buddy who spent three hours swapping out a dead hard drive in his desktop. Plugged it in, nothing. Took it back out, tested it on his other PC, worked fine. Turned out he forgot to flip the switch on the power supply.
