Just hit 10,000 feet of hoist rope replaced in my career
Was doing the math for a job in Chicago and it just hit me. That's like two miles of steel cable I've personally swapped out. Most of it was on those old Otis traction units from the 80s, the ones with the crazy tight machine room. My hands are basically sandpaper now lol. Anyone else ever stop and figure out a number like that?

Wasn't that grease more of a sticky tar? Felt like it glued my hands to the cable, not helped them slide.

Your hands being sandpaper explains the grip on those old Otis cables.

The real trick was the cable grease. That black gunk acted like a paste, mixing with skin oils and rust dust to form a perfect adhesive layer. Dry hands would just slide right off.
