My stance on video call backgrounds did a 180 after my colleague appeared in two places at once
I used to think fun virtual backgrounds were just a silly part of remote work. Then on a team call, I saw Mark clearly sitting at his desk behind me in the office reflection. But he was also on screen from his home office miles away. I asked about it after, and he said he hadn't been in the office for weeks. No one else on the call noticed the double image. That moment felt like a real crack in how we see each other online. Now I keep my background plain to avoid any more weird slips.

You talked about that crack in how we see each other online. This is everywhere, like on social media where people only show the good stuff. We make these perfect faces, but the real thing sometimes shows through. Isn't it weird how we believe these changed views? Your story with Mark is a small piece of a bigger thing. We get so good at hiding that the truth seems strange.

The part about truth seeming strange shows we're living in the lie.

Online, we've built so many layers that honesty feels odd. When truth seems strange, it means the lie is deep. How do we start taking those layers off?
