Maybe it's just me, but I'm seeing a move towards more conversational critiques in film circles

I mean, idk, it feels like some critics are ditching the ivory tower vibe and actually chatting with viewers online. It clicked for me when I got into a back-and-forth with a reviewer over their take on that new indie drama, and the whole exchange deepened my appreciation for the film.

My buddy who writes for a small blog got into a Twitter spat over a horror movie's pacing. He ended up revising his review after that thread, admitting some scenes worked better when you considered the director's intent. It was a pretty clear case of the conversation actually changing a critic's published take.

Chatting with viewers online" sounds nice but how much does it actually change? Feels like most critics just end up preaching to their own choir in a slightly more relaxed format.

Actually, direct engagement online can puncture echo chambers by forcing critics to address REAL questions. It's not just relaxed preaching, @milam42, because live feedback often challenges their assumptions in public. That exposure can subtly change MINDS over time, moving beyond the usual choir.
