Trying to decide between getting a Solo Stove or one of the heavy steel ones from S&S Fire Pits. I know they are very different styles (smokeless vs traditional heavy duty). Which one do you guys prefer for a permanent backyard setup?

For a permanent setup, S&S Fire Pits all the way. Solo Stoves are great if you want to move them around or take them camping, but they look a bit like washing machine drums on a nice patio. The S&S ones look like a classic, rustic centerpiece.

Totally agree on the aesthetic. S&S blends into the landscaping beautifully as it weathers, plus thick steel radiates heat outwards towards your legs much better than the double-wall smokeless designs do.

I've owned both over the years. The smokeless feature of Solo is cool, but you have to cut your wood pretty small to keep it below the rim. With my S&S fire pit, I can just throw massive logs on there and enjoy a real, roaring campfire without constantly tending it.
