PSA: That Mars documentary got me thinking about astronaut exercise

My friend works on space health studies and we talked after watching a film about long missions. He says daily workouts in zero-G are crucial to keep bones and muscles strong. But I read that some astronauts find the routine boring and it hurts team mood. Others think better gear or fun VR fitness could fix this. Do you think strict exercise is worth the hassle for deep space trips?

Heard this from my cousin who works at a gym. One of his clients was training for some ultra marathon, hours on a treadmill every single day. The routine was so grueling the guy just shut down, stopped talking to his running partners. His bad mood spread and messed up the whole group's dynamic for weeks. If that happens on Earth with normal gravity, I bet it's way worse stuck in a tin can. Strict exercise might be needed, but they have to find a way to make it suck less for everyone.

Your point about the gym guy is spot on. But here's what I wonder: do they factor in mental strain when planning astronaut workouts? It's one thing to need the exercise, but if it turns people into zombies, you've got a bigger problem. They must have tried things like virtual reality or team based routines to break the monotony. Otherwise, you're just breeding resentment in a closed space. I've heard some missions use competitive leaderboards, but that might make things worse if people take it too seriously. Is there a balance, or are we just hoping everyone stays chill?

Always thought workouts were just physical until @david_adams, but now what?
