My gallery show proved that street photography needs more artifice, not less
Purists will rant about capturing raw reality, but I've sold more prints from carefully constructed street scenes than any lucky candid. Intentional composition and subtle direction create narratives that resonate deeper than random moments. When did we decide that authenticity trumps artistic vision in this medium?

It's just photography reflecting our whole cultural obsession with "authenticity." We've decided raw equals real in everything from food to social media, even when it limits creative expression.

Honestly, constraints like raw authenticity often fuel creativity rather than stifle it. Look at street photography thriving on unposed moments, or chefs building menus around seasonal imperfections. Even social media's awkward honesty pushes content beyond glossy tropes. Calling it limiting ignores how rules force innovation. Sometimes the best art comes from working with what's real, not what's polished.

Annie Leibovitz's work shows authenticity in photography often requires careful construction, not just raw moments.

@the_nathan's performed authenticity idea expands beyond Leibovitz's construction.

Consider how we perform authenticity daily, something @william_carter hinted at. Maybe your constructed scenes just capture that deeper, performed truth better than any random shot.
