My big breakthrough with lifting paint for highlights
I was painting a simple sky scene and kept messing up the clouds. I read online about lifting paint to fix mistakes or add light areas. So, I tried it on some test paper first. You have to catch the paint when it's almost dry but still a bit damp. I used a clean, wet brush to touch the spot and then dabbed it with a tissue. It worked like a charm and left a soft, natural highlight. Now I do this all the time to save my paintings from looking flat. It's such a simple fix that I wish I knew sooner!

Wait, you use table salt for that?

Feel your pain with those flat skies before finding tricks like lifting. Good tip from @james_chen34 about salt too, that's a fun one to try next.
