inTIL that 'follow your passion' advice cost me 3 years and $15,000
Yeah I actually read this article last month about how the "follow your passion" thing started with some rich guy in the 70s who never had to worry about rent. It made me mad because I fell for that same trap back when I was doing concrete work on the side and thought I could turn it into some artistic career. Thing is, passion doesn't pay the mortgage and it doesn't cover your car breaking down. I know a guy who chased music for five years and now he's back doing HVAC and he's happier than ever because he can actually afford to go see live bands on weekends. The whole idea that your job has to be your everything is a scam that benefits people who already have money. Sometimes boring and steady is the most freeing thing you can do for yourself.

inTook me 5 years to realize I was over-sanding my butt joints
Bet you anything those old timers are the same guys who can hang a door without a level and it still comes out perfect. Funny how something so basic can mess up your whole finish game for years without anyone saying a word about it.

inSpent $300 on a 'career coach' who told me to talk to my houseplants
Huh, I mean I get the logic but isn't that kind of like making a tiny to-do list instead of the big scary one? Idk, for me after getting laid off I needed to just jump in and do a bunch of stuff at once. The small steps thing just made me feel like I was spinning my wheels. I'd do my one little task and then spend the rest of the day feeling guilty I wasn't doing more. Maybe it's just me but I think sometimes you gotta rip the bandaid off and tackle the whole resume overhaul in one go, even if it sucks. All those small wins never added up to real momentum for me, they just felt like checking boxes off a list that never got shorter.

inPSA: Watch out for rotten fence posts near old oak trees
I was talking to my neighbor who's a landscaper last summer and he showed me a sidewalk where the tree roots had actually cracked the concrete and grown right through it. He said the whole thing about roots going around is kind of a myth people tell themselves to feel better about planting trees too close to their house. The roots will push at anything in their way, concrete included, if they have enough time and water pressure behind them. I mean, I've seen pictures of whole asphalt roads getting lifted up by roots underneath, not a single curve around it. So I get what you're saying about them not just giving up and going around, but I think it's more that they just keep growing regardless of what's there.
