TIL I was using too much water in my mortar mixing

My buddy tried the same thing on his own foundation work after watching a video online and it went sideways. He ended up with this patchy mess that looked like cottage cheese stuck between the bricks. Took him like three weekends to chip it all out and redo it with a stiffer mix that his neighbor's dad showed him. Now he swears by the dry mix method and won't even look at a wet batch for pointing. Guess some lessons have to be learned the hard way before they stick.

Rant: Client kept touching my face during a lash lift yesterday

Agree, grabbing her hand is the only way to stop the face-touching madness.

Overheard a guy at the auto shop say something about oil filters

My brother-in-law used to work at a Jiffy Lube and he told me the same thing. He said the cheap filters have a bypass valve that opens at around 8-10 PSI, while the good ones like Mobil 1 or Wix hold until 15-20 PSI. What that means is when you start your car in cold weather, the thick oil can't get through the filter media fast enough, so it just pushes the valve open and flows unfiltered. I read a study once where they cut open filters and the cheap ones had cardboard end caps that would warp and let oil bypass even sooner. I've been using Wix for years on my old Ford and it's never given me trouble.

Update: Changed my mind about greasing swing bearings daily

Hold on a second @ryanh56, I have to gently push back on that. I think you might be mixing up a couple of things here. Those old handbooks from the 1950s and 60s are great, but they often had measurements based on worn-out tools, not brand new ones. The actual specs from the original manufacturer for that lathe model say the clearance angle should be 8 degrees, not the 5 degrees you'll see in those reprinted books. If you try to follow that old handbook too closely on a modern tool, you'll end up with too much chatter and a rough finish. It's a small detail but it makes a big difference once you're actually cutting steel.
