inVent: Copy-pasting Stack Overflow code cost me 6 hours of debugging
Heard a podcast recently where the host said Stack Overflow is basically a museum of code now. You search for something, and the top result is from 2015 with 2,000 upvotes, but it's for a library version that's been dead for years. That's your exact point @simonp47 about the React pattern. I've started adding the date to any snippet I copy from there. If it's older than 2 years, I assume it's broken until proven otherwise. The voting system just makes it worse because old answers get buried under new ones that actually work.

inAppreciation post for the volunteer cleanup crew at Legion Park last Saturday
Oh man, I gotta disagree a bit here. I walked through there Tuesday and the main paths looked fine but there's still a ton of trash stuck in the bushes along the treeline.

inMy brand new phone case cracked on the first drop and the company basically shrugged
So you paid forty five bucks for a case that gave up on one little drop? I had almost the same thing happen with a wallet case a couple years back. I took photos right when the corner split and sent them to my credit card company. They had my money back in less than a week. @tyler_wilson is right about card companies siding with you when a product fails that fast. The worst part is these companies bank on most people just giving up so they can keep the cash.

inCalled my buddy crazy for spending $200 on a sous-vide cooker. Now I own 3 of them.
The moment that got me was a cheap Ikea skillet. I used to swear by non-stick pans, thought cast iron was just for hipsters who liked heavy cookware. But I burned through non-stick pans every six months, getting frustrated with scratched surfaces. Picked up a cast iron for 15 bucks at a yard sale, seasoned it badly but it still worked. Now I've got 4 different sizes and I use them for everything from searing steaks to baking cornbread.

inVent: Why does everyone push oversized blazers like they're the only option?
...and honestly that's exactly why I ended up just going with a classic fit and flare dress for my cousin's wedding last spring. I tried on so many trendy pieces and every time I looked in the mirror I felt like I was playing a game of "what decade am I from?"... The blazer thing especially, it just hangs wrong on most people unless you've got the perfect build for it. What finally worked for me was finding a simple sheath dress in a deep navy, something that didn't fight my body or scream "look at this cool vintage piece." It had a little bit of structure but wasn't stiff, and I didn't spend the whole night adjusting it or wondering if I looked like a kid raiding their mom's closet. Sometimes playing it safe is the smartest way to go, you know?
