Spent 80 bucks on a fancy dinner and she ordered a side of fries because nothing else looked good

I mean, if she only ordered fries, she probably just wanted to keep it low key and see if you vibed without committing to a full meal. Maybe next time just suggest a place with cheaper apps so you don't stress about the bill.

My buddy Ron laughed at my tent setup on our first trip together last spring

That old canvas tent is probably built like a tank, my buddy Dave had one from the 80s that weighed a ton but you could sleep through a hurricane in it. Ron sounds like the kind of friend who knows his gear, maybe a little too well (like the guy who shows up with a hammock setup that takes 45 minutes to hang). The funny thing is, I've seen guys spend four hundred bucks on a lightweight tent only to have it rip on a branch, while the beat-up stuff just keeps going. One time I borrowed a tent from a neighbor, an old Coleman from the 70s, and it smelled like mothballs but I slept like a baby in a rainstorm. There's something about gear that's been through a few trips already, it's got that lived-in feel a new tent just can't match.

Rubbed a brisket with straight coffee grounds on a whim and the bark turned out like charcoal

Nah, coffee works great if you cut it with brown sugar and paprika.

Overheard a senior dev say 'you don't need to memorize syntax' and it changed how I study

100% agree, I had the exact same wake-up call about six months ago. I was spending like 3 hours a night just drilling Python syntax into my head, and then I'd sit down to actually write a script and freeze up completely. Then I started doing those LeetCode problems and just googling the stuff I didn't know, like for loops and list methods. That was the real game changer. I actually remember the syntax now because I've used it to solve real problems like thirty times, not because I stared at a flashcard. Interviews are a different beast, sure, but for day-to-day coding, knowing where to look stuff up is way more valuable than having it all in your head.

Used to hate on variant covers until I saw one in person at my LCS

I remember grabbing a Jim Lee variant of Justice League #1 at my local shop for cover price. The art just pops way more in person with all those ink lines and background details. Not every variant is worth it but some of them really change how you see the book.
