Everyone keeps saying AI art steals from artists but they ignore the real issue with training data consent
Honestly I keep seeing people argue about whether AI art is theft or not, but they always skip the part that actually matters. Last week I was reading about how Stability AI trained on 5 billion images scraped from the web without asking anyone, and that number alone should make people stop and think. On one side you have people saying it's fair use because the model doesn't store the images, just learns patterns. On the other side you have artists like Greg Rutkowski who found his name being used as a prompt over 90,000 times on one site, and he never agreed to any of it. I know this because I've been following the lawsuits and the LAION dataset docs for months, and the consent part is way messier than the theft part. So my question is, if the model can't work without our work, shouldn't we at least get a say before it's used?
