Question about the Cahokia Mounds debate: were they a city or just ceremonial?

I was down in Collinsville, Illinois last spring checking out Monk's Mound and got into it with a professor who was saying the whole area was more like a seasonal gathering spot, not a permanent city. On the other hand, the visitor center there says it held 10,000 to 20,000 people at its peak with residential zones. Who's got the better evidence on this, the old school population estimates or the newer revisionist take?

Swapped from a router sled to a handplane for flattening slabs and I'm never looking back

I spent last Saturday fighting my router sled on a 6 foot walnut slab from a supplier in Nashville, dealing with tearout and a loose bit that nearly cost me a finger. Finally grabbed my old Stanley No. 7, spent 20 minutes tuning the iron, and had that thing flat in under an hour with zero drama. Has anyone else made the switch and felt dumb for not trying it sooner?

I laughed at the guy sleeping in airport terminals until I tried it myself

Back in 2019 my buddy swore he saved $400 on a trip to Chicago by crashing at O'Hare instead of getting a hotel. I thought he was nuts. Then last year my flight got delayed at 11pm and I had nowhere to go. I found a quiet gate near baggage claim with bench seats that had no armrests. Used my backpack as a pillow and a hoodie as a blanket. Woke up at 5am feeling okay and saved myself $80 on a random motel. Has anyone else found a decent sleep spot at a specific airport that actually works?

Finally passed 500 safe days without a callback on my route

I hit 500 days on Tuesday with zero callbacks for the buildings I service downtown. That felt pretty good because last year I was getting dragged back into one specific building every other month for a door lock issue. Turned out the door hangers were just worn down and catching on the lock latch. Once I replaced those on all 12 floors the problem went away. Anyone else track their callback numbers or just me?

A neighbor swore I needed an airlock on my first kraut batch

I skipped it and used a regular mason jar with the lid barely cracked for 3 weeks, and the cabbage turned out fine with no mold, so has anyone else had luck just going lidless for simple ferments?

Told a customer to go with plywood backs, they insisted on MDF, now it's all warped 6 weeks later

I finished a kitchen remodel back in June for a client in Portland. They wanted MDF backsplash panels because it was cheaper, and I warned them about moisture but they said just do it. Fast forward to last week, they call me furious about bubbling and swelling behind the sink. Now I'm stuck spending a full day ripping it out and replacing with plywood for free because I didn't get it in writing. Has anyone else had a customer ignore your advice and then blame you when it fails?

Spent 6 hours building outreach lists last week, zero replies

I manually scraped 200 blog owners from my niche in home renovation using Ahrefs and built personalized emails for each one. Not a single response after 7 days, even the low authority sites ignored me. Turns out half those sites were dead or the contact forms were broken. Anyone else have better luck with automated scraper tools or should I just buy a list next time?

A superintendent told me my punch lists were too vague and I started numbering every single issue

He said 'if I have to ask what you mean by touch up paint, your list is useless' so now I write things like 'west wall column 3 - 2 inch scratch above outlet' with a photo reference. Has anyone else had to overhaul their closeout documentation?

An old comic shop owner told me to stop bagging my silver age books and I thought he was crazy

Guy named Jerry who's been running a shop in Portland for like 40 years saw me putting a 1968 Spider-Man into a new bag and board. He pulled me aside and said I was trapping moisture against the paper and it would yellow faster. I didn't believe him because everyone bags everything right? But then I checked some books I'd bagged 5 years ago and they had that brown edge thing going on. Now I only bag books from the 90s onward and leave my older stuff in Mylar sleeves with no inner bag. Has anyone else gotten advice from an older collector that went totally against what you thought was standard practice?

Can we talk about cold pizza versus microwaved pizza for breakfast

I've seen this debate pop up a few times, and I'm firmly on team cold pizza straight from the fridge. Last Sunday, I had leftover pepperoni and mushroom from a place called Tony's. I tried one slice microwaved for 30 seconds and one slice cold. The microwaved slice got that weird, rubbery crust and the cheese turned into a greasy mess. The cold slice kept all the flavors separate and the crust had a nice chew. It's a texture thing for me. The cold fats and congealed cheese just hit different when you're still waking up. Has anyone else done a side by side test like this and reached the same conclusion?
