Rant: an old lead told me to stop chasing torque specs by feel and I hated hearing it
I used to snug stuff down by hand and eyeball it, swore I could feel when a bolt was right, then a lead in Tulsa watched me do it on a nose gear and said flat out "you're guessing, and guessing is how gear doors fall off." Now I keep the chart open and click a wrench every time, even on little stuff, and yeah it takes longer but nothing has come back loose in 8 months. Anybody got a torque value they still do by feel no matter what the book says, or am I the only one who caved on this?
My buddy Dave down in Wichita watched an old timer torque a drain plug on a King Air by feel and the guy swore by it. Two weeks later that plug walked out over the plains and Dave got to explain a fuel stain the size of a driveway to the owner. Book said 40 inch pounds, the old timer said his wrist knew better, his wrist was wrong. Dave clicks a wrench on everything now, even the little panel screws, and he flat out told me the extra ten minutes beats the phone call every time.
