I keep seeing people mix up copyright law and ethical sourcing when they talk about training data.

Absolutely, that drives me up the wall. It's like people think if something is legal to use, then it's automatically okay to use it. Just because you can scrape a site doesn't mean you should, especially without asking. The ethics of where the data comes from is a whole different, and much harder, question.

Yeah but scraping sites is actually illegal a lot of the time.
