The self-checkout at Kroger made me question my whole stance on facial recognition

I was scanning my stuff on Lane 12 at the Kroger off 75th Street when the screen popped up asking to verify my age for a bottle of wine. I'm 47, clearly old enough, but the camera wouldn't let me through until I stared at it for 3 seconds. It just hit me that we're all casually handing over biometric data every time we buy groceries, and nobody even blinks. Are we really okay with this trade-off just because it saves us a minute in line, or am I the weird one for finally noticing?
