Burnt wings at a Super Bowl party changed my whole preheat habit

I was over at my buddy's place in Cleveland for the game last month. He tossed wings in the basket straight from the fridge, no preheat. We got pale skin and raw spots near the bone, total mess. I checked the manual after, turns out the timer starts before the element even hits temp. Now I always run mine empty for 5 minutes first. Has anyone else had this happen with a bigger batch?
