Discovered my air fryer hits 425F but the manual says 400F max

I was checking my new air fryer with a separate oven thermometer last night and it read 425F even though the display said 400F. Found a video from a home appliance tester that said most air fryers run 15-25 degrees hotter than what they show. Has anyone else tested theirs and found a big temperature difference?

Read a thing from a University test kitchen that said most air fryers run hot by design because the sensors are usually near the back wall where it's cooler. Makes sense actually, they want the food to hit the right temp in the center so the heating element cranks it up a bit. Your unit hitting 425 is pretty normal, I've seen some models run 30-40 degrees over. Just watch your food a few minutes early the first time you cook something, especially with baked goods or delicate stuff. They're honestly great appliances once you know how yours runs.

Same reason thermostats lie, they average the room from a bad spot. @gavinw45 nailed it too.

@barbaraw47 yeah I saw the same thing from some food science blog, they said basically the same. My air fryer runs about 25 degrees hot, I just knock 20 off whatever the recipe says and it works fine.
