A senior mechanic in Phoenix called me out on my torque wrench technique
I was tightening a cylinder base nut on a Lycoming O-360 and thought my method was fine. He watched for a minute and said, 'Kid, you're pulling at an angle. You're off by at least 10 foot-pounds.' He showed me how to keep the handle perfectly level and re-check with a calibrated wrench. I've been double-checking my pull angle on every critical bolt since that day. Anyone else have a simple technique they had to unlearn?

My buddy did the same thing with a head gasket.
