My first hotel retrofit job finally clicked after 14 years

I got called to an old Marriott outside of Columbus last month. Place was built in the 80s and the panel was a mess. Previous installer ran every zone on two loops, no labels, and the smoke detectors were daisy chained through the thermostat wires. I spent 6 hours just mapping it out. But when I finally got the whole thing programmed and every zone tested clean, the manager actually came down and shook my hand. Said the fire marshal had been on them for 3 years about it. That moment made me realize why I do this. Has anyone else had a job where the customer's relief was the best part of the pay?

Is it normal for smoke detectors to be wired through thermostat circuits?
