Unpopular opinion: I stopped hiding wires in the wall and my customer was happier
Had a job in Salem last month where the homeowner wanted every run fished through the walls like always. Halfway through, I asked if she'd rather see the conduit surface mounted and painted to match, since her place was 1920s plaster and lath with zero crawl space. She picked the surface mount, we finished in a day instead of three, and she sent me cookies plus two referrals. Now I'm wondering if I've been making extra work for myself all along, or if this was just one weird house. Do you fish everything no matter what, or do you pitch surface mount when the walls fight back?
Pitch the surface mount every time the walls are pure plaster and lath. Fishing those old Salem houses eats your whole day and you still crack a chunk of ceiling. Paint the conduit to match the trim and most folks can't even spot it from the couch. Three days down to one is money in your pocket and hers.
