Unpopular opinion: That guy who said to skip the junction box on wire splices was dead wrong

I took advice from a guy named Dave at a supply house in Austin last spring. He told me it was fine to just twist wires together and tape them up inside the wall if you're in a pinch. I did it on a rush job for a small office retrofit (like 4 zones of sensors). Well, 2 months later the tape came loose and the alarm went off at 3am for a false trip. Had to rip out a section of drywall to fix it. Now I swear by putting a real box on every splice no matter how much extra time it takes. Has anyone else had a shortcut like that come back to bite them?

Inspectors have their pet theories and I get that but a taped splice in a wall is still a hidden time bomb no matter how tight your wire nut is. A junction box gives you a real enclosure with strain relief and a cover that keeps dust and drywall debris out. I'd rather spend an extra 10 minutes cutting in a box than gamble on tape holding up for years.

That electrical inspector in my county actually randomly checks new work on Fridays after lunch because he says that's when most code violations get buried in walls. He told me once he's seen more fires from taped splices inside junction boxes than from splices in walls because people get lazy and don't torque the wire nuts down tight. It's not just about having a box but actually making sure you use the right connectors and twist everything properly.
