I chose a fixed apartment in Lisbon over a 'nomad hub' and it was the right call

Last year, I had to pick between a six month lease on a quiet apartment in a real Lisbon neighborhood or moving every month between those popular coliving spots in places like Bairro Alto. Everyone said the hubs were the only way to meet people. I took the apartment, which cost about 1100 euros a month. For the first two weeks, it was quiet, but then I joined a local running club and a Portuguese class. I made deeper friends there than I ever did in transient hostel common rooms. My work focus improved massively with a stable desk and kitchen. Has anyone else found that putting down temporary roots, even for a few months, works better than constant movement?

Question about a weird power supply failure in a client's gaming PC

I was at a client's house in Tacoma last week, and their new build would power on for exactly three seconds then shut down. I swapped in my own PSU and it booted fine, but their unit tested okay on my bench load tester. Has anyone else seen a PSU fail only under the specific load of that motherboard?

Just blew $200 on a 'smart' resume scanner that's clearly just an AI with bias baked in

It rejected a perfect candidate because their degree was from a non-US university, no human would have flagged that. Anyone know a real, ethical screening tool that doesn't just automate prejudice?

Showerthought: I used to hate drawing backgrounds...

I was at a small con in Portland last month, showing off a character piece. This older guy stopped and just said, 'She's great, but where's her world?' He pointed at my empty white canvas behind her. We talked for maybe ten minutes about how a simple texture or color wash tells a story. I went home and added a faded brick wall behind her, and it completely changed the piece. Does anyone have a good brush pack for quick, painterly backgrounds?

Had to pick between a $12 avocado toast or a $4 bagel with cream cheese at a cafe in Portland.

I went for the toast because it looked so good in the picture, but it was just okay, not worth the price at all. The bagel my friend got looked way better and he seemed really happy with it. Anyone else feel like avocado toast gets way too much hype for what it is?
