A client's offhand comment about anime review channels reshaped how I engage with critique.

Stop outsourcing your brain to strangers. It makes your work generic. Do your own thing.

Question whether letting a client's casual remark redefine your approach to critique is even wise... it risks outsourcing your analytical framework to someone who might not share your depth of engagement with the material. Anime review channels, for instance, thrive on subjective takes, and bending your method to fit a passing comment could dilute your unique voice. Stick to developing your own criteria based on consistent study rather than reactive shifts from external chatter.

Yeah, the idea of "outsourcing your analytical framework" that @the_daniel mentioned really hits home. A friend of mine used to do these incredibly detailed breakdowns of sound design in anime, his niche was amazing. Then some random YouTube comment said his videos were "too clinical," and he totally pivoted to doing only shallow, hype reaction content just to chase that approval. It completely erased what made his perspective special, and honestly, his channel got lost in the algorithm because he sounded like everyone else. He was so worried about one outsider's take that he abandoned the deep engagement that actually gave his critiques value. It was a total lesson in how one offhand remark can derail your entire approach if you let it.
