Crown raising mistake that took 4 months to fix

I did a crown raise on a mature red oak in Austin back in April and took off way more low scaffold branches than I should have. By July the bark started sun scalding on the southwest side even though I thought I left enough canopy. Has anyone else dealt with delayed sun damage after a heavy raise, or is it just me being paranoid about my cuts?
