A museum guard in Dublin asked me why I cared so much about a broken pot, and I did not have a good answer
I was at the National Museum in Dublin looking at some Bronze Age pottery shards when the guard wandered over and asked me what was so special about a bunch of broken cups. I started rambling about carbon dating and trade routes, but he just nodded and said most folks walk past that case in 10 seconds. That stuck with me because he was right, I had spent maybe 15 minutes staring at those shards and could not really say what I got out of it. Now I wonder how much of my interest in digs is real and how much is just liking the idea of it. Does anyone else ever feel like they are performing interest at museums instead of actually feeling it?
Oof, I used to think I was super into museums and history, like it was my whole personality. Then I went to the British Museum and spent most of the time in the gift shop, and realized I mostly just liked the idea of being someone who cares about old stuff. That guard sounds like he did you a favor honestly.
