Bought a $35 soil probe online and it helped me find a colonial trash pit in my backyard
I picked up a cheap metal soil probe for around $35 after seeing one in a museum supply catalog, mostly because my trowel kept hitting roots in my yard near Richmond, Virginia. Used it two weekends ago and the tip hit a soft spot about 10 inches down, which turned out to be an old trash pit with pipe stems and a piece of pearlware. I would have never dug there because the ground looked totally flat and boring. Now I am wondering if I got lucky or if probes are actually that useful for finding sites. Does anyone else use one, and how do you tell a real feature from just loose fill?
