The 1998 excavation in Turkey I walked away from after 2 days
Last summer I signed up for a dig near Catalhoyuk, thinking it would be this great hands-on experience. Showed up on Monday morning and the lead archaeologist handed me a trowel and pointed at a 40-foot square grid. By Tuesday afternoon I had brushed dirt for 14 hours and found exactly one pottery shard the size of my thumbnail. The guy next to me had been there for 3 years and got excited over a rock that looked slightly different. Has anyone else signed up for a volunteer dig and realized it's way more boring than the documentaries make it look?

Man, I think I'd rather watch paint dry.

My buddy sat through a whole three-hour documentary on cement drying once.
