Just had a convo with my barista that totally flipped how I think about tips

I was grabbing my usual coffee at that shop on Elm street last Friday and this barista named Jess just casually asked why I always tip a flat dollar. I said it's what I always do, figured it was fine. She laughed and said most people do that but they actually remember the regulars who tip a percentage because it scales when drink prices go up. I never thought about it that way. Now I'm doing 20% and it stings a little more on my wallet but I get better service and she remembered my name the next day. Has anyone else had a random conversation like that totally change a habit you didn't even question?

Honestly, "people notice that stuff" is kind of a stretch. Most folks are way too busy worrying about their own stuff to be clocking whether someone wore the same shirt twice. They probably just nodded and moved on with their day, same as anyone would.
