That $85 lunar filter I bought was a total bust on my first full moon shoot

Spent 85 bucks on a variable polarizing moon filter thinking it would cut the glare for better crater detail, but it just made the whole image look hazy and soft - has anyone found a filter that actually works for lunar photography without breaking the bank?

85 bucks for a filter. Should've just stacked a couple cheap ND filters and saved your money.

Just stack some cheap ND filters? Yeah, GREAT idea if you want to turn your moon into a muddy potato with weird color fringing. I tried that once and got SO mad because it just added more glass to mess with the sharpness. The hazy soft look you got is classic variable ND problems only worse on the moon because of its HIGH contrast. Honestly, the best luck I've had is with a simple single polarizer from a BRAND name on sale, not some fancy multi-coated variable thing. You're basically paying 85 bucks to learn that moon filters are a scam for anything but dimming the brightest part, and even then they're finicky.

@angelar57 did the polarizer actually fix the color fringing or just hide it?
