Rant: A customer's 'minor' bumper scuff on a 2021 Silverado turned into a 3-day nightmare with the parking sensors
Guy comes in, says he tapped a post. Looked like a quick sand and paint. Pulled the bumper cover and found the bracket behind the sensor was bent just enough to throw the whole system off. Had to get a new bracket from the dealer, wait for it, then recalibrate all four sensors. The quote was for $400, ended up being over $1200. He was not happy. Anyone else run into these sensor issues becoming way bigger than the visible damage? What's your process for checking them on a quick estimate?

Yeah, and it's not just the sensors. Like @margaret_kelly55 said, you check the tech. But what about the paint thickness? A respray on a panel with a sensor can mess with the signal if it's not done just right. Now I worry about the fix holding up long after the car leaves.

Exactly, and like margaret_kelly55 said, even a tiny crack can mean a whole new sensor unit hiding behind there.

Tell me about it. My shop had a similar story with a Honda's blind spot monitor. The quote was for a simple buff job, but the radar unit behind the plastic was cracked. The customer's face when we told them the new price was a picture I didn't want to take. Now we always hook up the scanner for a quick check on any car with those fancy bumpers, even for a small scrape. It adds five minutes to the estimate but saves a week of headaches later.
